Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala is a globally recognized ayurvedic institution founded in 1902 by Vaidyaratnam P.S.Varier, having hospital branches in Delhi, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore Chennai and Bahrain. The main hospital is situated in Kottakkal and having an Ayurvedic research centre at Chankuvetty, Kottakkal .The chief physician is Padmasree Dr P.K. Varier, who is the son in law of P.S Varier .Arya Vaidya Sala focuses on cultivation of medicinal plants, manufacturing medicines. Also conducts research programmes, publishes books and seminar reports on Ayurveda and related subjects. The main source of their income is sale of ayurvedic medicines.AVS is also getting income from both the global and domestic patients .Globally speaking patients are coming from Europe, gulf countries, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The AVS Kottakkal is globally branded mainly through the Word of Mouth.
The AVS kottakkal is running a PSV Nattya Sangam which promoting the traditional arts like Kathakali, Chendamelam, Mrithangam etc…They performed kathakali in many places including the residence of Indian president and in European countries. Some of the persons who are accompanying with the patients visit the PSV Nattyasangam and some of them are interested and are studying the traditional arts from there. During Kottakkal pooram season PSV Nattyasangam performs kathakali on 5 days which is tremendous traditional feast to the tourists who are interested in kathakali.Kottakkal pooram conducting in month of ‘meenam’ (Malayalam calendar month) .In this month the number of patients from the global level is increasing because of the sukha chikitsa as well as the pooram.
The AVS Kottakkal won the corporate responsibility award from TERI for the the year 2006-07.AVS was given the award in recognition of its role in discharging social responsibilities.AVS is the first institution in kerala to receive this award. The AVS Kottakkal’s CSR includes
1: Giving free medicines to the common people
2: Giving free treatment to the people below poverty line.
3: Free medicines according to salary scales.
4: Giving free food to the common people during the ten days of pooram. (Where many people from different religion and places are coming together and this brings unity)
Around 300 families are directly depending up on the AVS Kottakkal and indirectly more than thousands of peoples depending on it.
AVS Kottakkal is running based up on the will of Vaidya Ratnam Dr P.S. Varier. According to this will AVS should strictly focus on the service not on profit motive .Since they are providing same treatment to the Indian President and a common man.
